Game Review: Plague Inc.

Plague Inc is one of my favorite games of all time. I remember sitting in a Drafting class playing the game for weeks on end (sorry Mr.Geesman – we still got our projects done though). Back then – almost 15 years ago, the game was called Pandemic 2 and was a great SWF. Now, Plague Inc. by Ndemic solutions is a fantastically complicated version of one of my childhood all-star games.

In the game, you take control of a plague. That plague then targets and eradicates the entire human race. While you play, you unlock additional game types, new plagues, scenarios, genes to mutate your disease, and of course a blood fever for killing the human race.

Back in the day, game play was all about hitting Greenland or Madagascar. If you missed those on the start, you were done. Now as you play the game, there are a wealth of strategies to infect and destroy humanity. I find myself infecting the US more often than not, simply because it is an excellent hub of activity.

If you have never played the game before, give it a try! It is well worth the money.

Summary

Not only is this a well designed game, it has tremendous education value. I have used it in several secondary science courses to teach Virology and Epidemiology. Since it was created in conjunction with the CDC, most things are accurate. With a great gameplay, well designed interface, continuous updates and expansions, and a great teaching application, this earns a well deserved 5 stars!
