The Mad Dog and the Quest for the Onesy (GTA SEA)

Welcome to the Google Teacher Academy Well, it is official, I am here in Manila at the Google Teacher Academy. 53 applicants from around the world are meeting at the Asian Institute of Management. I got in the night before at rush hour and in the middle of a torrential downpour – there was knee-high water in the streets. The airport was great, but getting to the hotel – normally a 15-20 minute drive – took almost 2 hours. Since we are a bit isolated on Jeju, I tried to just take in the city on the way. When the driver said we were getting close, I spotted a nice Thai place...

BYOC Research: First Edition

As I continue to work through the BYOC Model, and the idea that we should “flip” the roles of students and teachers in BYOD, I am still constantly trying to find research and best practice for BYOD/BYOT in an educational setting. Since the BYOC model that I propose is based upon the architecture and methods of BYOD, it has to be valid for a traditional BYOD implementation and current trends in BYOD. I like to think of BYOC as the natural evolution of BYOD to be more person centered, rather than device centered. That was a lot of words to say: Lets look at the world of BYOD....

Keeping Students Safe in a Digital World

Writing this post is similar to opening pandora’s box. First and foremost: this is a post for parents. Parents: now that there are internet resources about how to do these things, you may need to do some of your own research as your children will always find a way. Recently, I have had more and more requests from Parents about how to monitor student computer use. That being said, we still have to monitor computer use...

The Technology Directors Guide to Leadership: Post 1

As I continue to grow in my own understanding of the Role of a Technology Director, I increasingly turn to those books and resources (from organizations that I trust) about the topic. This Quarter, I have decided to examine The Technology Director’s Guide to Leadership by Don Hall. This reading is in the middle of several other books including: City of Bones, The Best Students in the World, and Reality is Broken. Hopefully I do not stray too much as I read this book. Don Hall is a Technology Director! He works primarily with large districts and has been a leadership scholar for many...

BYOC vs. BYOD (Weighing in on the debate)

In late 2012, an article was written by a Technology Writer named Bridget McCrea. That article was published in Campus Technology (which is geared toward Higher Education) and was designed to walk readers through the pro’s and con’s of BYOD. There is a distinct line supporters of BYOD and those that denounce BYOD in all forms. I belive that BYOC, in an education specific context can bridge the divide around BYOD and help students more actively use technology. The reason I have chosen this article is because Bridget did a great job of taking the perspectives and backing them up...
